Nexperia has introduced two new USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery controllers aimed at engineers building power adapters from 18 to 140 watts. Designed to reduce component count and increase flexibility, the NEX52041 and NEX52080 provide a solid foundation for high-efficiency, multi-standard USB-C power systems.
Rather than focusing solely on compliance, these controllers bring together field-updatable firmware, integrated protection, and support for a broad mix of charging protocols, making them particularly well-suited for engineers working on universal chargers or performance-critical designs.
Built-in Flexibility for Evolving Standards
At the core of both devices is an embedded MCU with 16 kB (NEX52041) or 32 kB (NEX52080) of MTP-ROM. This gives engineers the freedom to customise charging behaviour and apply firmware updates as new USB PD specifications roll out. It’s a practical way to extend product lifespans and add unique features without changing hardware.
The controllers are also protocol-flexible. Alongside USB PD, they support multiple fast-charging methods that rely on D+ and D− signalling. This allows a single adapter design to serve a wide variety of devices, including phones, laptops, tools, and older accessories.
Integrated Protection to Simplify Design
One key engineering benefit is the on-chip 30 V overvoltage protection at the connector pins. Many competing USB PD solutions require discrete circuitry to handle high-voltage faults, but Nexperia’s approach integrates that directly. The result is a more robust solution with fewer components and a cleaner board layout.
Smart Interface and Power Sharing
With programmable GPIOs and I2C support, these parts are ready for more advanced charger applications. They can communicate with companion ICs in multi-port setups, enabling dynamic power distribution or coordinated thermal control. Combined with built-in constant-voltage and constant-current regulation, they also fit well into both DC/DC and AC/DC designs, including those using opto-isolated feedback.
Suited to Complete System Integration
Nexperia’s wider product portfolio allows these controllers to be deployed alongside matching GaN FETs, MOSFETs, AC/DC converters, and ESD/TVS components. For engineers working under tight timelines, that makes it easier to source a full charging solution from a single vendor.
Where They Can Be Used
- Compact USB-C wall adapters with single or dual ports
- Laptop or tablet chargers requiring high wattage and flexible firmware
- Multi-standard travel adapters needing wide compatibility
- GaN-based fast chargers targeting reduced BOM and size
- Power bricks with load balancing or port prioritisation features
Final Word
The NEX52041 and NEX52080 are more than just controller ICs. They are tools for engineers building practical, flexible, and efficient USB-C power systems. Whether you're optimising for compatibility, size, or long-term support, these controllers offer a well-rounded platform to build on.
