Vishay Introduces MKP1848e DC-Link Capacitor For Harsh Environments

Uploaded image Vishay Intertechnology has added a new automotive-grade DC-Link film capacitor to its portfolio. The MKP1848e is built for high-stress conditions, combining long-term stability with operation up to +125 °C and qualification to AEC-Q200 standards.

Designed For Heat And Humidity

Many film capacitors used in power electronics are rated only to +105 °C. That limit can create problems in under-hood automotive systems or compact industrial converters where heat builds quickly. The MKP1848e extends the ceiling to +125 °C, giving designers more freedom without the need for extra cooling.

Reliability has also been tested under humidity. The part meets IEC60384-16 Grade III requirements, surviving more than 1300 hours at 60 °C and 93 % relative humidity while held at rated voltage. Vishay also cites 1000 thermal shock cycles between –40 °C and +125 °C, which makes the series a fit for harsh outdoor or automotive environments.

More Current In Less Space

The MKP1848e handles ripple currents up to 44.5 A with ESR values down to 1.0 mW. Vishay says it offers around 25 % higher ripple current density than earlier designs of the same size. For engineers, that means fewer capacitors in parallel or smaller overall banks when size is a concern.

Capacitance values run from 1 µF to 140 µF, with voltage ratings between 500 VDC and 1300 VDC. At 500 VDC the footprint can be cut by as much as 40 % compared with previous options, while at 900 VDC the reduction is around 15 %. Pitch sizes start at 22.5 mm, which helps when packing multiple devices onto a board.

Applications Across Power Conversion

The capacitor is aimed at automotive systems such as on-board chargers, DC/DC converters, e-compressors, and HVAC modules. In industrial and energy sectors, it targets solar inverters, motor drives, fast chargers, battery storage, UPS equipment, and even hydrogen electrolyzers. For electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, the MKP1848e can handle voltages from 250 VDC to 800 VDC at +125 °C for limited periods, matching common traction and charging levels.

Availability

Samples and production quantities are available now, with typical lead times of 10 weeks. Terminal customisation is also possible on request.
