Diodes PI2DPT1021Q Boosts Signal Integrity for Automotive USB and DisplayPort Systems

Uploaded image As automotive networks move toward higher data rates and unified USB Type-C interfaces, signal quality is becoming a serious engineering challenge. Diodes Incorporated has introduced the PI2DPT1021Q, a retimer IC designed to keep USB 3.2 and DisplayPort 1.4 links clean and stable in harsh automotive environments.

The device is aimed at next-generation infotainment systems, instrument clusters, and display modules that share high-speed data and video channels across a single connector. By compensating for heavy channel losses and timing noise, the PI2DPT1021Q helps ensure that gigabit-level data remains reliable even over long PCB traces and flexible cables.

Reliable Data at 10 Gbps

The retimer supports data rates up to 10 Gbps and can correct up to –23 dB of signal loss at 5 GHz. It combines receiver equalization with a continuous-time linear equalizer (CTLE) and includes jitter cleanup for clean clock recovery. A programmable three-tap TX equalizer allows fine-tuning of output strength to suit different board layouts or connector designs.

Latency is kept below 1 nanosecond, which is low enough for seamless interaction between USB and DisplayPort streams. Engineers can use the same connection for data, video, and power without risking visual artifacts or USB dropouts.

Power and Flexibility

The PI2DPT1021Q supports several operating modes: four-lane DisplayPort 1.4 (HBR3), two-lane DisplayPort with a single-lane USB 3.2 link, or dual-lane USB 3.2 Gen2. Configuration is handled through I²C, and the chip automatically aligns with system power-saving states such as USB U1–U3 and DisplayPort D3.

An integrated AUX listener maintains link awareness even when the system is idle, cutting overall power use without affecting responsiveness.

Compact and Automotive-Ready

With a footprint of 2.85 × 4.5 mm in an X1-QFN-32 package, the retimer fits into space-constrained modules such as camera control boards or head units. It operates from a single 1.8 V supply across –40 °C to +105 °C and meets AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification. Production takes place in IATF 16949-certified facilities, complete with PPAP documentation.

For industrial or consumer systems, Diodes also offers a companion version, the PI2DPT1021, with the same electrical characteristics.

Why It Matters

Modern vehicles now depend on high-bandwidth interfaces to move data between displays, sensors, and compute modules. Each signal path introduces potential loss and timing drift. The PI2DPT1021Q gives designers a simple way to restore signal quality without complex board redesigns, making it easier to meet automotive reliability targets while keeping system layouts compact and efficient.
