Kinetic Technologies has introduced the KTS1642Q, a 6 A automotive load switch designed to protect downstream electronics from the electrical conditions found on vehicle power rails. The new device operates from 4 V to 40 V and combines reverse-battery, overvoltage and overtemperature protection in a 4 × 4 mm TDFN package.
The KTS1642Q is AEC-Q100 qualified and is intended for automotive systems that need to remain protected through events such as cold crank, reverse battery, load dump and other supply transients. Applications range from ECUs and ADAS camera modules to instrument clusters, infotainment and telematics.
4 V to 40 V Operation with -28 V Reverse Protection
Automotive electronics can see supply conditions well outside their normal operating voltage. During engine starting, for example, the battery rail can fall significantly, while load dump and other transient events can push it in the opposite direction.
Kinetic specifies the KTS1642Q for operation down to 4 V, allowing the switch to support systems during cold-crank conditions. At the other end of its operating range, the device accepts inputs up to 40 V and provides reverse-battery protection down to -28 V.
A fixed overvoltage protection threshold of 20.3 V is built into the device, with a typical OVP response time of 360 ns. If the input rises beyond the permitted level, the load switch can disconnect sensitive circuitry downstream.
When paired with appropriate external TVS diodes, Kinetic says the KTS1642Q can support designs addressing ISO 7637-2 transient requirements and the electrical stress conditions covered by ISO 16750-2.
6 A Output with 41 mΩ On-Resistance
The integrated MOSFET is rated for a continuous output current of 6 A and has an on-resistance of 41 mΩ. Keeping the switch resistance low limits the voltage drop and power dissipated across the device when supplying higher-current loads.
Overtemperature protection is included with automatic retry, allowing the switch to shut down during an excessive thermal condition and attempt to resume operation once the condition has cleared. Battery detection and a fault flag output are also provided for system monitoring.
Input ESD protection is rated to IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4, covering ±8 kV contact discharge and ±15 kV air discharge. The remaining pins are rated to ±2 kV HBM in accordance with AEC-Q100-002.
The KTS1642Q operates from -40°C to +125°C and is supplied in a 4 × 4 mm TDFN package.
Two versions are available now. The KTS1642AQGDV-TR uses an active-high enable input, while the KTS1642QGDV-TR provides active-low enable.
