Renesas RA8T2 MCU Delivers 1 GHz Motor Control and Built-In Networking

Uploaded image Renesas has added a new high-performance option to its RA family with the RA8T2 series, designed for applications where motor control precision and network speed both matter. At its core is a 1 GHz Arm Cortex-M85, with an optional 250 MHz Cortex-M33 that can take care of communication or background tasks. Keeping both processors on a single device helps engineers cut board space, lower power use, and simplify overall design.

Focused on Real-Time Performance

The Cortex-M85 is built for tight control loops, and with Arm’s Helium extensions it can also handle DSP workloads and basic machine learning at the edge. That means predictive maintenance and anomaly detection can run locally, without offloading data to the cloud. Memory is equally well considered, with fast MRAM for non-volatile storage, 2 MB of SRAM, and tightly coupled memory on both cores to keep latency predictable when interrupts are flying.

Hardware for Modern Motor Drives

Rather than relying on software alone, Renesas has packed in features that make motor control easier. The general-purpose timer supports PWM generation up to 300 MHz and can output complementary waveforms with automatic dead-time insertion. Phase counting for encoder feedback is included, and two simultaneous-sampling 16-bit ADCs let designers capture three-phase current values for two motors at once. Safety is covered by high-speed comparators and a Port Output Enable function that can quickly disable PWM outputs if an overcurrent is detected.

Built-In Networking Options

Factory automation systems increasingly need every device to talk to the network in real time. The RA8T2 includes dual Gigabit Ethernet MACs with DMA and an integrated EtherCAT slave to support synchronised motion across multiple nodes. USB, CAN FD, SPI, I²C and I3C interfaces round out the connectivity options, allowing multiple communication channels without adding extra chips.

Development and Applications

Renesas backs the new devices with its Flexible Software Package, complete with drivers, middleware and RTOS support. Development kits and the Motor Workbench tool make it easier to tune control algorithms and migrate code from existing RA or RX designs.

For robotics, CNC machines and servo drives, this combination of speed, memory and communications could help reduce latency, improve synchronisation and make designs easier to scale.
