RECOM Opens Up Discrete Isolated Power Supply Design

Uploaded image Isolated DC/DC power modules simplify a lot of design work, but they also lock the transformer, control stage, and layout strategy into a fixed package. RECOM is now giving designers a more discrete approach with a new range of SMD transformers and matching power ICs intended for isolated power supply development from 1W through to 30W.

The new transformer families are designed for engineers building their own isolated DC/DC converter stages rather than using fully integrated power modules. RECOM’s new portfolio supports flyback, push-pull, and full-bridge converter topologies with standard SMD transformer options covering common voltage combinations and isolation requirements.

The company says the transformers support isolation withstand voltages up to 5000VAC/min while also tolerating two reflow cycles with peak temperatures up to 250°C for 10 seconds.

Transformer Families For Different Converter Topologies

RECOM has split the range into several transformer series depending on topology and power level. The RMR-xxx series covers sub-miniature 1W and 2W toroidal SMD transformers intended for push-pull and full-bridge driver designs. Isolation ratings range from 1.5kVDC/min through to 4.5kVDC/min.

Two parts in the series, the RMR-028 and RMR-031, move into higher-isolation territory with 5kVAC/min isolation ratings and wider creepage and clearance spacing. These transformers are intended to pair with RECOM’s RVP-xxx push-pull and full-bridge transformer drivers.

Flyback Transformers Up To 30W

The RBE-xxx series targets higher-power flyback converter designs from 6W to 30W. These are bobbin-type SMD transformers designed for use alongside RECOM’s RVPW-xxx flyback transformer drivers. Isolation ratings extend from 1.5kVDC/min up to 6kVDC/min depending on the device.

RECOM is also positioning the RPE-021 toward designs requiring higher isolation spacing and enhanced insulation performance.

Another device, the RPE-026, has been designed specifically for bidirectional battery cell charging and discharging applications in combination with the company’s RPSV013 bidirectional PWM controller and synchronous rectifier IC.

More Control Over Layout And Thermal Design

The wider idea behind the launch is flexibility. Instead of using a fixed isolated power module, designers can build around discrete driver ICs and transformers while controlling the layout, spacing, thermal handling, and component positioning themselves. That becomes more relevant once systems move into unusual form factors, higher production volumes, or applications where isolation spacing and transformer placement have to fit around the rest of the hardware rather than inside a predefined module footprint.

RECOM says the approach also allows pricing advantages at larger production volumes compared with complete isolated module solutions.
