JAE Introduces ST20 Stacked-Tray Connector for nanoSIM and microSD Cards

Uploaded image JAE has introduced the ST20 Series, a compact card connector that supports nanoSIM and microSD cards in a stacked two-tier tray. The new design reduces mounting area by approximately 50% compared with JAE's existing ST19 Series, which places both cards side by side.

The ST20 uses the top and bottom surfaces of a single tray. It can hold a nanoSIM card on the upper side with a microSD card below, or nanoSIM cards on both sides, giving designers a 3-in-2 configuration for devices where PCB space is limited.

Stacked Tray Reduces PCB Area

JAE's ST19 Series combines nanoSIM and microSD cards on a single plane. The ST20 changes the mechanical arrangement by stacking the two card positions vertically.

The complete connector measures 2.35mm high, 15.2mm wide, and 15.9mm deep. JAE positions the series for smartphones, tablets, drones, dashcams, gaming consoles, and notebook PCs, where larger batteries and additional electronics continue to compete for board space.

Card insertion and removal use a push-pull tray mechanism. The tray also includes retaining features and a structure intended to prevent incorrect insertion.

Two Reflow-Mounted Components

The ST20 slot is formed from a socket and a separate block, both mounted to the PCB by reflow soldering. Once assembled on the board, the two parts form the upper and lower contact positions around the stacked tray.

The socket contains the connector housing, contacts for the upper side of the tray, and a normally closed detection switch. The lower block carries the contacts for the underside of the tray and can support either a nanoSIM or microSD card.

According to JAE, this arrangement removes the need for a separate joining mechanism between the two connector sections.

Electrical and Mechanical Specifications

The ST20 Series provides 20 contacts plus two switch contacts and is rated for up to 0.5A and 10V. Initial contact resistance is specified at 100mΩ maximum for the signal terminals.

The connector is rated for 2,500 insertion and removal cycles and operates from -25°C to +85°C. Dielectric withstand voltage is specified at 500VAC RMS for one minute, with initial insulation resistance of at least 1,000MΩ.

Contacts use copper alloy with gold plating over nickel. The connector also includes an anti-buckling contact design and a normally closed tray detection switch.

Technology Overview

The JAE ST20 Series is a stacked-tray combo connector for nanoSIM and microSD cards. A single tray carries cards on its upper and lower surfaces, reducing PCB mounting area by approximately 50% compared with JAE's side-by-side ST19 Series. The connector supports nanoSIM plus microSD or dual nanoSIM configurations.
